I'm gonna use this thing
So i've decided that I'm really gonna start using this blog tool as a daily diary/writing tool. I figure why not use it, write my thoughts out and see what happens! I don't have enough time to write something extensive at the moment, but just as an fyi to myself (since nobody else looks at this blog page), starting to blog is now officially on my "To Do" list! :) <3

Exercise 5.1
Exercise 5.1 mcnamara184.blogspot.com
I looked at four different articles from Ohio State’s Newspaper The Lantern. The first article that I looked at dealt with the Black Fraternities on campus and how they are all currently on “social moratorium.” The article focuses on the fact that there had been a specific incidence or two where acts of violence had occurred at a specific fraternity house/party. Therefore, the entire Black Greek community is suffering the consequences. Not only was this story “newsworthy” in itself, but the end of the article discussed how this punishment would affect the relationship between the Black Greek community and the larger OSU Greek community. I’m sure that there is already a certain tension between these two groups since they are probably held to different standards, but unfair punishment to the Black Greek community now might even further segregate the two organizations.

The second article or feature in the lantern that I looked at was a crime brief section of The Lantern. This article gave four different updates on local crimes that have recently taken place around campus. The article gives the location and date of the crime, what exactly happened, and how much money or worth of valuables was taken. This is an important thing to have featured in the newspaper so that students are aware of the dangers around them. This article had a very “to-the-point” manner and was also extremely beneficial.

The third article was an article that revealed all the Oscar nominations and buzz about the upcoming Academy Awards. This is obviously a huge event in Hollywood and extremely relevant to a lot of different people. People tune into the award show so that they can cheer for their favorite movie, song or actor. This article has a lot of drawing effects such as the “Hollywood factor” and the excitement about different huge celebrity names. The article presents the nominations in a simple and direct way and gives people exactly the information they are looking for.

The last article focused on the issue and the possibility of co-ed living in the dorms at OSU. It mentioned two other schools who have already implemented the idea and said that both of those schools feel that it has been a success. The article talked about both the pros and the cons to an issue that is very relevant to college students and OSU students who would be the ones reading The Lantern. The end of the article states that OSU will not be implanting co-ed dorms anytime soon since there are so many room switching situations that would arise.

Exercise 3.2
Exercise 3.2
Advocate (n): one who pleads another’s cause or in support of something
Convince (v): to persuade by argument or evidence
Entice (v): to tempt with hope of reward or pleasure
Induce (v): to persuade. To bring on or about
Influence (n)(v): power to affect others. To have influence or effect on
Manipulate (v): to work to handle skillfully. To manage artfully or shrewdly, often in an unfair way
Persuade (v): to cause to do something, especially by reasoning, urging, etc; convince
I think that persuasion is a key part to being a public relations writer. Often when one is writing to either inform or persuade their audience, they are using tools of persuasion to express their idea or point of view. I think the ultimate goal of public relations is to have your audience walk away with a similar thought, idea, opinion or desire to what you have expressed in your writing.
Persuasion is a powerful tool in general and if one can master it, the possibilities are endless as to what one can achieve. People hold so many different opinions and attitudes and others are constantly trying to change them. With public relations, the art of persuasion can mean the difference between convincing your audience to trust your writing and to listen to what you’ve said. Since there are so many different forms of communication, media and writing in general, a public relations writer must be able to captivate the audience’s or consumer’s attention quickly. Persuasion is a great way to play off the emotions or desires of the audience and to get them to pay attention immediately. If the interest of the reader is lost within the first seconds or minutes, the message that one is conveying will not be heard or understood.

Excercise 1.3
Dear Charlie,
I have wanted to write you this letter addressing what you said about my working in the public relations field the other day. I have been running over our conversation repeatedly in my head, trying to figure out how to convince you otherwise. And I’ve come to the conclusion that the biggest thing I can tell you is just that public relations is what I’m meant to be doing. I think I could really find a place in this field of work. And I know that you have a negative interpretation of writers who manipulate their audiences and sugar coated lies that benefit big empty corporations, but I promise you that’s not what public relations is all about. Public relations is the ability to take a thought or an event and to clearly communicate that to a listening audience. I think that I could really add my passion and enthusiasm into my writing and succeed by making people listen and by making them aware. I could make a difference in the choices that people make or the ideas that they hold. So I hope that you will come to support me in my endeavor because I plan on making an incredible and unique addition to the world of public relations and it would mean a lot to have you with me along the way. Think about it…
Sincerely,
Christi

Excercise 1.1
I think that writing is a great way to express your thoughts, emotions and ideas. It is incredible the way some people can take a certain topic or specific information and convey the meaning of that subject through their writing. I think that it is sometimes easier for a writer to put what they have to say down on paper rather than to say directly in front of other people. Writing eliminates the direct response of rejection or critique.
I do like to write very much. I can remember writing songs, poems and attempts at short stories all the time when I was younger. I actually thought that I would end up being a professional writer. Writing has always come easy to me, but I definitely write more on the expressive than the factual side. I not only write when I absolutely have to, but I still enjoy writing poems or just reflections that help me deal with certain situations in life.
I would say that I think I am a pretty decent writer. I may lack a little bit of discipline in the structure or the technicalities of my writing, but I think that I am able to effectively express my thoughts or my emotions in what I write. I’ve written several speeches for specific events and I have always gotten a tremendous audience response.
I would love to fine tune my writing in terms of my technical skills. I think that I am used to elaborating and “beefing up” my language with details and descriptions which is what I often had to do to fill the pages for school papers. I would love to learn in a concise manner which would serve more for public relations writing. I also think the structure of my writing along with more learning more advanced techniques would really improve me overall as a writer.
