I looked at four different articles from Ohio State’s Newspaper The Lantern. The first article that I looked at dealt with the Black Fraternities on campus and how they are all currently on “social moratorium.” The article focuses on the fact that there had been a specific incidence or two where acts of violence had occurred at a specific fraternity house/party. Therefore, the entire Black Greek community is suffering the consequences. Not only was this story “newsworthy” in itself, but the end of the article discussed how this punishment would affect the relationship between the Black Greek community and the larger OSU Greek community. I’m sure that there is already a certain tension between these two groups since they are probably held to different standards, but unfair punishment to the Black Greek community now might even further segregate the two organizations.

The second article or feature in the lantern that I looked at was a crime brief section of The Lantern. This article gave four different updates on local crimes that have recently taken place around campus. The article gives the location and date of the crime, what exactly happened, and how much money or worth of valuables was taken. This is an important thing to have featured in the newspaper so that students are aware of the dangers around them. This article had a very “to-the-point” manner and was also extremely beneficial.

The third article was an article that revealed all the Oscar nominations and buzz about the upcoming Academy Awards. This is obviously a huge event in Hollywood and extremely relevant to a lot of different people. People tune into the award show so that they can cheer for their favorite movie, song or actor. This article has a lot of drawing effects such as the “Hollywood factor” and the excitement about different huge celebrity names. The article presents the nominations in a simple and direct way and gives people exactly the information they are looking for.

The last article focused on the issue and the possibility of co-ed living in the dorms at OSU. It mentioned two other schools who have already implemented the idea and said that both of those schools feel that it has been a success. The article talked about both the pros and the cons to an issue that is very relevant to college students and OSU students who would be the ones reading The Lantern. The end of the article states that OSU will not be implanting co-ed dorms anytime soon since there are so many room switching situations that would arise.
